RSS Feeds

RSS feeds are available for many GovInfo collections and generally include the 100 most recent documents published. Feeds are also available for bulk data, which can be used with GPO's bulk data repository to download XML data sets in bulk.

RSS feeds are commonly used on blogs (weblogs), news websites, and other places with frequently updated content. RSS is an easy way to keep up with news and information that's important to you. By subscribing to an RSS feed, you can have content delivered directly to you without receiving an email.

RSS feeds, (which have the extension ".xml", ".rss", ".sfm", ".cfm", ".rdf", ".aspx", or ".php"), require installation and use of RSS aggregator software. An RSS aggregator allows you to subscribe to an RSS feed. There are many aggregators available; some are free and some are available for sale.

An RSS aggregator gathers material from websites that you tell it to scan, and it brings new information from those sites to you. It's a convenient format because it allows you to view all the new content from multiple sources in one location on your desktop or mobile device.

Custom Search-based Feeds

As of September 2024, users now have ability to generate a RSS feed based on a specific set of GovInfo search results. For any search, select the RSS button at the top-right of the search results to generate a link to a custom RSS feed that can be used with a feed reader. This will work similarly to the existing standard RSS feeds, including direct links to content files and the content details page for each result.

These dynamic, search-based feeds are set to poll for updated content every hour, so feed readers will not automatically request updates more often than that.

Note that you can use any keywords or fielded searches for this RSS feed functionality.

Steps:

  • Perform the desired search, including applying any filters. For example rinnumber:1506-AB54, then filter on Federal Register. Here is a link to those results.
  • Click on the RSS icon at the top right corner of the search page.
  • A pop-up message displays, “RSS feed URL copied to clipboard”.
  • Open an RSS feed reader and add the URL from the clipboard.
  • See the results (up to the initial 100) and as new content becomes available, the results will appear in the RSS feed.
